How do automatic shut-off nozzles in fuel dispensers work?

Author:Wdmachine Date:2025-08-29

One of the most important safety features of a fuel dispenser is the automatic shut-off nozzle. This mechanism works by using a small sensing port located near the nozzle tip. As fuel flows, air moves through this port. When the fuel level inside the vehicle’s tank rises to cover the port, the airflow stops, creating a vacuum that triggers a spring-loaded valve inside the nozzle. This action instantly shuts off the fuel flow.

Thanks to this technology, fuel dispensers prevent overfilling, reduce spillage, and minimize the risk of fire or environmental contamination. Automatic shut-off nozzles have been a standard feature for decades and continue to evolve with enhanced safety designs, making fueling both safe and convenient for drivers.
