What Is a Flow Computer and How Does It Work with an Oil Flowmeter?

A flow computer is a dedicated electronic device that receives raw signals from a flowmeter—typically pulse, frequency, or analog outputs—and processes them together with temperature and pressure measurements to calculate accurate, standardized flow quantities. In oil measurement, raw volumetric flow data must be corrected for temperature and pressure effects to express the quantity at a standard reference condition (typically 15°C or 60°F). This correction is essential in custody transfer and allocation applications where oil is bought and sold by standardized volume. The flow computer applies internationally recognized calculation methods, such as those defined by API MPMS Chapter 11, to perform these corrections automatically.

Modern flow computers combine a microprocessor, memory, display, and communication interfaces in a single instrument package. They accept inputs from multiple flowmeters, densitometers, temperature transmitters, and pressure transmitters, allowing a single unit to manage an entire metering run or station. The flow computer continuously computes instantaneous flow rate, accumulated totals, and derived quantities such as energy content. It also monitors for alarm conditions—including high/low flow, temperature, or pressure excursions—and logs events, alarms, and audit trail data in non-volatile memory. This data can be exported via MODBUS, HART, OPC, or Ethernet protocols to SCADA systems, DCS platforms, or cloud-based data management systems.

Security features in flow computers are essential for custody transfer applications. Access to configuration, calibration, and correction factors should be password-protected and logged to prevent unauthorized tampering. Tamper-evident seals on the enclosure and a sealed configuration memory provide additional protection. Many jurisdictions require that custody transfer flow computers be type-approved by government metrology authorities, demonstrating that the calculation algorithms comply with legal requirements. Regular verification of the flow computer's inputs, calculations, and outputs is part of the overall metering system audit program and ensures that the system continues to meet accuracy and legal requirements over time.
