Offshore oil platforms and floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels present unique challenges for flowmeter installation and operation. The marine environment exposes equipment to corrosive seawater, high humidity, salt air, and mechanical vibration from waves and vessel motion. Flowmeters on offshore facilities must be constructed from highly corrosion-resistant materials, such as duplex stainless steel or super duplex alloys, and must be rated for the extreme environmental conditions of offshore service. Space constraints on offshore platforms also demand compact, lightweight meter designs that can be easily maintained in confined quarters.
Offshore oil measurement serves several critical functions, including well test metering (measuring the individual production rates of oil, gas, and water from each well), allocation metering (determining each field partner's share of produced oil), and fiscal metering (measuring the oil quantity exported from the platform for custody transfer). Each of these measurement applications has different accuracy requirements and technical specifications. Well test metering must handle multiphase flow conditions, while allocation and fiscal metering typically operate on single-phase (degassed) oil and require high accuracy to support equitable revenue sharing and regulatory reporting.
Maintaining flowmeters on offshore facilities requires careful planning because the cost and complexity of offshore maintenance are much higher than onshore. Meter designs should be selected for ease of maintenance, with minimal interventions required under normal operating conditions. Redundant metering arrangements—where two meters are installed in parallel and can be cross-checked against each other—improve reliability and provide continuity of measurement if one meter requires maintenance. Remote diagnostics via satellite communication links allow onshore engineers to monitor meter performance and identify potential problems before they escalate, reducing the need for costly and potentially risky offshore maintenance trips.
