Lubricant distribution systems—found in large machinery, manufacturing lines, steel mills, paper mills, and power plants—deliver precisely controlled quantities of lubricating oil to bearings, gearboxes, and other rotating and sliding components. Accurate flow measurement within these systems is critical because both under-lubrication (causing premature wear and overheating) and over-lubrication (causing oil waste, foaming, and contamination) can lead to equipment failure and unplanned downtime. Flowmeters provide the continuous monitoring and control data needed to ensure that every lubrication point receives the correct amount of oil at the right time.
In a centralized oil lubrication system, a single reservoir and pump supply oil to multiple lubrication points through a distribution manifold. Each branch line may have its own flowmeter to verify that the correct flow is reaching each bearing or gearbox. For small-bore tubing used in machine tool lubrication systems, very low-flow-rate meters—often oval gear or gear meters in small sizes—are used to measure flows in the range of milliliters per minute to a few liters per minute. These precision meters must maintain accuracy even at very low flow rates and be insensitive to the pressure pulsations generated by the lubrication pump.
Condition monitoring of lubrication systems increasingly relies on flowmeter data to detect changes in lubrication requirements that may indicate developing machine faults. A bearing that starts to require more oil to prevent overheating, or a gearbox that shows unexpected changes in oil consumption, can be identified early by trending lubrication flowmeter data over time. Integration of flowmeter data with vibration, temperature, and oil quality sensors creates a comprehensive picture of machine health that supports predictive maintenance. Replacing traditional time-based lubrication with condition-based lubrication—informed by flowmeter data and other condition indicators—can significantly reduce oil consumption, maintenance labor, and unplanned downtime.
