A Coriolis flowmeter is a sophisticated instrument that measures the mass flow of a fluid by detecting the deflection of vibrating tubes caused by the Coriolis force. When fluid flows through a vibrating tube, the Coriolis effect causes the tube to twist slightly—the degree of twist is directly proportional to the mass flow rate. By measuring this phase shift between the inlet and outlet sections of the tube, the meter derives an extremely accurate mass flow measurement. In addition, because density affects the tube's natural vibration frequency, Coriolis meters can simultaneously measure fluid density and calculate volumetric flow.
Coriolis flowmeters are widely used in oil applications where maximum accuracy is required. Their key advantages include direct mass flow measurement without the need for density compensation, high accuracy (typically ±0.1% or better), and the ability to handle a wide range of fluid viscosities without recalibration. They are used in petrochemical blending, crude oil custody transfer, fuel additive injection, and laboratory calibration stands. Because they have no moving parts in contact with the fluid (other than the vibrating tubes), they require minimal maintenance and are highly resistant to wear.
Despite their many advantages, Coriolis flowmeters have some limitations. They are generally more expensive than other meter types, especially in larger pipe sizes. Two-phase flow—where gas bubbles are entrained in the oil—can cause significant measurement errors and even drive-failure conditions. Very high-viscosity fluids may cause excessive pressure drop across the meter. In very large-diameter pipelines, the cost and pressure drop of a single Coriolis meter may make other technologies more practical. Nevertheless, for applications demanding the highest accuracy and minimal maintenance in medium-diameter oil lines, the Coriolis flowmeter remains the gold standard.
