Selecting a flowmeter for heavy oil applications requires careful consideration of the unique challenges posed by high-viscosity, high-density fluids. Heavy crude oil, residual fuel oil, and bitumen can have viscosities many orders of magnitude higher than water or light petroleum products, making many common flowmeter technologies unsuitable. The meter must be capable of handling the expected viscosity range throughout the operating temperature range, since heavy oils become even more viscous at lower temperatures and can partially solidify if not kept warm.
Positive displacement meters—particularly oval gear and rotary piston types—are the most widely used technology for heavy oil measurement because they perform reliably over a very wide viscosity range. They do not require a minimum fluid velocity and can accurately measure flow even with very thick, slow-moving liquids. However, as viscosity increases, pressure drop across the meter also increases, which must be within the capacity of the pumping system. Coriolis flowmeters are also well-suited for heavy oil because they measure mass flow directly and are relatively insensitive to viscosity changes, though their pressure drop at high viscosities can also be significant.
Other important selection criteria for heavy oil flowmeters include material compatibility with the fluid (some crude oils contain sulfur compounds or waxes that can attack certain elastomers and metals), ease of cleaning and maintenance access, availability of heating jackets or insulation to maintain minimum operating temperature, and compliance with hazardous area electrical certification requirements. Ensuring that all wetted parts are made from materials resistant to the specific oil's chemical composition is essential for long-term reliability. Working closely with the flowmeter manufacturer and providing a detailed fluid data sheet will result in the most appropriate and durable meter selection.
