An oil flow switch and an oil flowmeter serve related but fundamentally different functions in oil handling systems. A flow switch is a binary device that outputs a simple on/off signal when the oil flow rate exceeds or drops below a preset threshold. It is used primarily for safety and protection purposes—for example, to detect the loss of lubricating oil flow to a bearing, triggering a machine shutdown before damage occurs, or to confirm that flow has started or stopped in a transfer line. Flow switches do not provide quantitative measurement of flow rate or volume; they simply indicate whether flow is present or absent above a minimum threshold.
A flowmeter, in contrast, provides a continuous, quantitative measurement of the oil flow rate and/or accumulated volume. It enables process monitoring, control, billing, inventory management, and performance analysis. Flowmeters are more complex, more expensive, and require calibration and regular maintenance to ensure accurate readings. Flow switches are simpler devices with fewer moving or sensing parts, typically requiring less maintenance and lower cost. The choice between a flow switch and a flowmeter depends entirely on whether quantitative flow data is needed or whether a simple flow-present/flow-absent indication is sufficient.
In many oil systems, both flow switches and flowmeters are used together. The flowmeter provides the continuous quantitative measurement needed for process control and accounting, while flow switches provide safety protection by initiating alarms or shutdowns if the flow rate drops below safe minimum levels. For example, in a lubrication system, a flowmeter at the pump outlet measures total oil consumption for maintenance trend analysis, while individual flow switches on each lubrication point confirm that oil is actually reaching each bearing. This combined approach ensures both operational measurement accuracy and safety protection, maximizing the reliability and safety of the overall oil handling system.
